The Case For Remote Ham Radio
Before We Make the Case for RHR, Here’s How It All Began…
Before RemoteHamRadio.com became the leading platform for remote ham radio operation, it started with two hams chasing a dream. Between 2008 and 2012, Lee (WW2DX) and I, Ray (W2RE), were deep in the tower business, running Hudson Valley Towers. During that time, we serviced over 75 station owners, maintaining, upgrading, and even constructing ham stations from the ground up.
In 2010, I finally bought my dream QTH—a 2,200-foot Catskill mountaintop, spread across 20 acres, with no neighbors in sight. We built a serious contest station there—four towering towers, a true MEGA station. But there was one big downside: it was a 105-mile drive each way just to operate.
That’s when the idea struck—what if we could operate it remotely?
By 2012, RemoteHamRadio was born. But it wasn’t easy. The biggest challenge wasn’t just building the infrastructure—it was ensuring the software was seamless, and most importantly, making sure it was FCC-compliant.
We brought in two of the best: a tower attorney and a retired FCC lawyer, asking for a legal opinion that could make or break our vision. Weeks later, the green light came in—and with it, the launch of RHR from the W2/Summit QTH.
That was just the beginning.
I’ll share the full behind-the-scenes in a blog soon, but for now, let’s fast forward to what really matters:
Why RemoteHamRadio.com Might Be Exactly What You Need
Whether you're living under HOA restrictions, lack the land for a full station, or just want to operate from anywhere in the world, RHR opens the door. Let me show you how.
FlexRadio Hardware
Inside the Jonesport Station: Where Flex Gear Powers the Big Leagues 🎧📡
This is the Flex gear we run — most of our sites are equipped with the Flex 6000 series radios paired with powerful PGXL amplifiers.
You’re looking inside the Jonesport station, home to five dedicated operating positions, each connected to world-class antenna systems — the kind rarely seen in ham radio. This is serious DX territory.
But don’t worry — it’s not all “big gun” gear. We also have small pistol stations designed for budget-conscious operators who still want premium performance.
Whether you're just getting started or chasing the top of the leaderboard, we've got a station for you.

Think of RemoteHamRadio.com as Your Personal Tower Crew 🏗️📡
It’s really that simple. With RHR, you never have to worry about a rotor failing, climbing a tower in your 60s or 70s, or maintaining a complex setup in your backyard. Many of you reading this know exactly what I mean.
Maintaining one tower is tough — imagine managing over 50, all ready for you to use at a moment’s notice. That’s what RHR delivers: world-class stations without the hassle.
Yes, it’s a paid service — but if used strategically, it can keep you in the game for years to come, with top-tier performance and reliability.
We’ve now grown to over 30 remote-access sites on the paid network, plus another 13 stations available free for youth operators around the world.
Because at RHR, we don’t just provide the best remote ham radio service on the planet — we give back. Our RHR Youth Program is 100% donor-supported, funded entirely by RHR and a few generous station owners.

World-Class Stations, Worldwide Access — That’s RemoteHamRadio
It’s no secret—RemoteHamRadio operates some of the finest remote ham stations in the USA. From MEGA sites in Arizona, Georgia, and Washington State to powerhouse stations across New England and New York, these locations are engineered for top-tier performance. But RHR isn’t just a U.S. story.
We’ve expanded globally with sites in Croatia (9A), Slovenia (YT), and Bosnia (E7)—strategically located to give hams around the world a serious edge. If you hold a full license and your country has a CEPT agreement with these regions, you can legally operate using your call sign with a local prefix (e.g., 9A/YourCall).
It’s not just fun—it’s effective. Operators from the U.S. and Europe have already achieved DXCC using our international sites. Imagine working the world while sitting in your living room!
